How to Best Practice Logistics
Logistics is defined as the science of how to manage the handling of goods, information, energy, and labor. The concept of logistics was originally used by the military to figure out how to supply arms and other resources needed by soldiers. Later, the concept of logistics services spread and was used in other sectors, including shipping, industry, health, banking, web development, and information technology.
Logistics services in general are used in different business and industrial sectors to increase efficiency and productivity of the organizations. The logistics industry has proven successful in all the sectors it is implemented in. UPS is one example of the successful implementation of logistics in the shipping sector.
How are logistics practices evaluated? KPIs, or Key Performance Indicators, help to evaluate and measure the performance of logistics services and their effects on organizations. By using KPIs you can control an organization's logistics practices to yield the best results and the most efficient performance.
Logistics KPIs are a type of management metric. They can be used to measure the performance of the logistics practices in an organization. Some logistics KPI metrics are commonly used throughout most industries but others have to be customized for each organization.
Logistics KPI metrics have to be tracked over a period of time to monitor the performance of the organization over this specified period of time in relation to the KPI metric in question. Tracking KPI metrics helps in the detection of bottlenecks in the organization and other problem areas. Logistics KPI metrics must be chosen wisely based on full knowledge of the importance of that KPI metric and the factors affecting it, in order for this evaluation process to be successful.
An example of a logistics KPI can be one that is used to measure delivery efficiency. KPIs can help an organization evaluate its productivity also. Furthermore, KPIs can help an organization assess its performance and logistics practices and compare them with industry benchmarks. However logistics KPI metrics do not provide the solutions for the problems an organization will find while assessing its system. The logistics KPI metrics only touch on and define where the problem areas are.
System improvement techniques should then be introduced for the purpose of real change and improvement. They should be introduced quickly to overcome the root causes of the problem. The same logistics KPI metrics would then be tracked again to evaluate the efficiency of the improvements introduced and implemented. Again the tracking of the logistics KPI metrics after the improvements are made must occur over a certain period of time.
